Who is the mystery woman?

Bowie appears in the video for Where Are We Now? with an unidentified woman. Early rumours suggested it was Björk but this seems unlikely. Some then speculated that it could instead be Bowie’s ex girlfriend Hermione Farthingale (see Song of Norway, see below). THe answer is actually that she is artist Jacqueline Humphries, the wife of the video’s director, Tony Oursler.

Tacheles

The opening shot of the video features the word “Tacheles” spray painted on a wall. Tacheles was a large arts squat in central Berlin. Originally a department store, the building was occupied in 1990 by the Künstlerinitative Tacheles collective and became a symbol of post-unificiation creativity, hosting art, sculpture, music and theatre events until it was closed in 2012. .

“Had to get the train from Potsdamer Platz, you knew knew that, that I could do that”

One of several nods to the events of 1989. Potsdamer Platz is a major square in central Berlin and one of the first places where the Wall was breached. Roger Waters played his huge Wall concert in the square in 1990. Could the train reference also be significant? Bowie is a keen advocate of public transport, Tracey Emin told The Times in 2010. He once visited the artist at home: “I asked him how he got here and he said: ‘The Tube. You should try it sometimes, Tracey - you might like it.’”

“Sitting in the Dschungel on Nürnberger Strasse”

The Dschungel (meaning “jungle”) was a seminal nightclub, open from 1978 until 1993, which has been described as the closest thing that Berlin had to Studio 54 in New York. Bowie and his flatmate Iggy Pop were regulars and Mick Jagger, Prince, Barbra Streisand and Boy George all came through its doors.

“A man lost in time near KaDeWe”

An abbreviation of Kaufhaus des Westens, KaDeWe is Berlin’s largest department store and second only to Harrod’s in Europe. The excellent food hall would have been a good place for Bowie to pick up the peppers and milk that, alongside cocaine, coffee and cigarettes, reportedly formed his late Seventies diet.

“20,000 people cross Böse Brücke, fingers are crossed just in case”

The Böse Brücke was the first border crossing that allowed people through on November 9, 1989. Translated as “evil bridge”, it was actually named after the anti-Nazi resistance leader Wilhelm Böse.

Song of Norway

In the video, Bowie is wearing a T shirt bearing the legend “m/s Song of Norway”. Song of Norway was a play and later a film that starred Hermione Farthingale, an old girlfriend of Bowie’s who inspired the song Letter to Hermione on his eponymous 1969 album. Norway was also where Bowie narrowly escaped serious injury in 2004, after being hit in the eye by a lollipop thrown while he was performing.

Victory Column

The video includes a brief shot of the Victory Column, known in German as the Siegessäule, a monument that was erected in 1873 to mark Prussia’s victory in the Danish-Prussian War. The Siegessäule is a place where angels gather in Wings of Desire, the film by Wim Wenders, who has used Bowie’s music in his work. It also lends its name to a Berlin magazine for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, for whom Bowie remains an icon.
