One Direction and U2 both nominated for WORST band at 2016 NME Awards

THE full shortlist of awards for the magazine's annual extravaganza has been announced ahead of the ceremony on February 17 at London’s O2 Academy.

ONE Direction are up against U2 for the WORST Band title at NME Awards 2016 it has been revealed after a diverse group of nominees announced by the online magazine.

The Libertines, Donald Trump, T in the Park and David Cameron are also among those looking at potential awards at a ceremony early next year.

Pete Doherty and Carl Barat’s The Libertines and soft-grunge outfit Wolf Alice both lead the pack with six NME Awards nominations each.

Both bands will go head-to-head for some of the biggest awards of the night, including Best British Band, Best Live Band, Best Track, Best Music Video and Best Fan Community.

The ceremony may well prove to be a huge night for The Libertines following their return in 2015, after the band’s 11-year hiatus.

Wolf Alice have also received a nod for Best Album supported by HMV, while The Libertines’ secret performance at Glastonbury is listed as a strong contender for Music Moment of the Year.

Foals got four nods including Best British Band, Best Live Band, Best Album and Best Track.

The Maccabees, who are yet to add an NME Awards gong to their trophy set, are up for Best British Band, Best Live Band and Best Album supported by HMV.

Prime Minister David Cameron has proven unpopular with NME’s audience, nominated for the sixth consecutive year on the trot for Villain of the Year.

The PM, who has championed air strikes in Syria and was involved in revelations concerning a pig, faces stiff opposition fellow Tory politician George Osborne, Kanye West, presidential candidate and business tycoon Donald Trump, music and TV mogul Simon Cowell; and Radio X presenter, Chris Moyles.

The ever divisive Kanye West has split opinion.

He finds himself shortlisted for both Villain and Hero of the Year.

Kanye will go up against former adversary Taylor Swift for the Hero category.

Also on the Hero of the Year shortlist are Adele, Dave Grohl, Jeremy Corbyn and Florence Welch.

In the Best Festival stakes, Glastonbury will be looking to win for the third year running as it faces other nominated festivals Reading & Leeds, V Festival, T In The Park, Bestival and Isle of Wight.

5 Seconds of Summer were named Worst Band in 2015 and they are in with the chance of retaining the title, competing with One Direction, Little Mix, Sleaford Mods, U2 and Nickelback.

Mike Williams, editor-in-chief, NME said: “The NME audience has voted in its thousands, and once again have pulled together an exciting, diverse and in some places pretty surprising shortlist for the 2016 Awards.

“Will The Libertines crown their beautiful comeback with a couple of wins?

“Will Kanye be the hero and villain of the year?

“Can anyone stop the Adele juggernaut from pulverising everything in its path?

“All will be revealed on February 17 at the NME Awards 2016 with Austin, Texas once the people have had their final say.

“I’m really excited and can’t wait for the big night”
